Mentors should be willing and committed to assist in the developmental growth of the mentee. The mentor’s primary purpose is to help the mentee work toward mutually agreed-upon goals while clarifying their role and understanding the culture of the unit or organization in a structured, yet informal way. Effective mentors model professional behaviors, share practical tips, and open doors to resources and networks that accelerate learning. Frequent, two-way communication—offering affirmation, constructive feedback, and encouragement—helps the mentee build confidence, develop clinical judgment, and navigate common challenges. Mentors also promote accountability by checking in regularly, celebrating progress, and adjusting goals as needs evolve. Through this collaborative relationship, mentees gain a stronger sense of belonging in their practice setting and a clearer pathway for growth within pediatric surgical nursing.
