Maryellen Sheridan, MSN, RN, CNS

MaryellenMaryellen Sheridan received 3 letters of support. These letters of support were written by Andreas H Meier, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief, Michael H. Ratner, MD, Emeritus Professor of Surgery and Cathleen Caltabiano, RNFA, MSN, PPCNP-BC all from Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York.

Maryellen received her first nursing degree in 1986, 34 years ago. She began her role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Department of Pediatric Urology at Syracuse University College of Medicine in 1995 and later moving to the Department of Pediatric Surgery in 2008.

She has been a member of the APSNA Investment Committee during her years as Treasurer and now Immediate Past Treasurer where she provides support and mentorship to the committee and current treasurer. She is a valued and celebrated member of her team in Pediatric Surgery at Golisano Children’s Hospital winning many awards throughout the years including Pediatric Patient Experience Award, Pediatric Nursing Excellence Award twice and Pediatric Nurse of Distinction. She has written numerous grants throughout the years to provide programs that assist patients with supplies and educational materials.

Andreas H Meier, Professor and Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief, Golisano Children's Hospital, SUNY Upstate Medical University

Maryellen’s leadership is widely recognized within our institution. Currently she serves as the chair of the pediatric surgery shared governance committee.

She is a valued educator for nursing and medical students as well as surgical residents, who often are not familiar with the idiosyncrasies of a pediatric surgical practice. She is a major resource for junior pediatric nurses and she has overseen the education of 4 pediatric nurses during her time with us. She serves as a wonderful resource for float nurses when they need to be oriented to the pediatric environment.

Maryellen has received multiple awards within our institution. In 1995 she was named “Pediatric Nurse of Distinction”. In 2009 she received the “Pediatric Nursing Excellence” award. Most recently, she was honored with a Pediatric Patient Experience Award in 2019, celebrating her role as an outstanding communicator.

It is without hyperbole for me to state that she represents the glue of our Division. Her quiet, yet efficient and well-organized approach to daily business has made our outpatient clinic environment the envy of the Children’s Hospital. Her kindness, supportive attitude towards our patients and families have repeatedly resulted in some of the highest Press-Ganey scores within the whole medical center. She is thoughtful, knowledgeable and able to speak her mind without crossing other people. She is just an all-around treasure and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work with her on an almost daily basis.

Michael Ratner, MD, Emeritis Professor of Surgery, Upstate Medical University

I have known Maryellen for about 25 years and have watched her grow exponentially over that time. She began her career as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in 1995. She first came to my attention while she was working in the Pediatric Urology Division. I thought she was an outstanding Nurse Leader and when the Pediatric Urology Division underwent a re-organization in 2008, I was able to convince Maryellen to transfer to our Pediatric Surgery Division to continue her career. It quickly became apparent that not only was she a skilled clinical nurse, but she was also an outstanding leader and educator. She has been a strong leader for our team in the division office and clinic. In addition, she has been a tireless educator for our division as well as for the nursing staff in the Children's Hospital.

I have always been a fan of APSNA because I feel that the education and cross pollination that occurs through your wonderful education programs have greatly benefitted our Pediatric Surgery Division. I think I can take credit for introducing Maryellen to APSNA as I thought she would not only benefit herself and us in Syracuse, but that she would also be a great addition to the organization. She has brought so much back to us from her networking with APSNA colleagues throughout the country.

On the personal side, Maryellen is an outstanding human being, has helped raise a beautiful family, and has been successful in our community. I heartily endorse her nomination for this most prestigious award. I can think of no one more deserving.

Cathleen Caltabiano, RNFA, MSN, PPCNP-BC, Nurse Practitioner Pediatric Surgery Golisano Children’s Hospital

I have worked with Maryellen for 12 years in the pediatric surgery clinic at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Upstate. I have always been impressed with Maryellen. In our case, we found a rare gem. We found Maryellen. Maryellen exemplifies all of these characteristics. Maryellen is a force, plain and simple. Our doctors do great work, in part, because Maryellen is there to guide, assist and direct. Our patients receive top notch care, in part, because Maryellen is there to oversee, console and advise. Our office runs well, in part, because Maryellen is there to organize, look after and guide us. Our department is a great place to work because Maryellen is our cheerleader, protector and mentor. And I am a better provider, in large part because of Maryellen.

Maryellen is the type of nurse who always stays busy and is tasked with many jobs and projects within our department. One of the tasks is grant writing. Every year as the grant applications come out, Maryellen collectively polls the practice to see what grants we are interested in applying for and what our patient population would benefit from. I cannot think of a more deserving nurse for the 2020 APSNA Founder’s Award.
