Common Pediatric Surgical Conditions: Diagnosis and Management


This course was developed for nurses who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of the care of children with common pediatric surgical conditions. This web based program features 6 select surgical diagnoses including thyroid nodules, appendicitis, chest wall deformities, inguinal hernia, intussusception, and pyloric stenosis. Content addresses evaluation, management and follow up for these specific conditions. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.


Beth PatonElizabeth A. Paton, DNP, RN-BC, CPNP-AC, PPCNP-BC, CPEN, FAEN
Dr. Paton has been a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner since 1999. She practices at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee in the Division of Pediatric Surgery and for the last 10 years has been responsible for inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgical patients. Her areas of interest cover a wide range of surgical conditions for which she has developed knowledge and expertise in the surgical management of these patients including patient and family education and long term follow up. She is a national speaker on the care of surgical patients and pediatric nursing. She is a member of APSNA and is now serving as the 2016-2018 Director of Education.

Michelle GorethMichelle B. Goreth, MSN, RN-BC, CPNP-AC, CCRN-P, CTRN, CPEN, TCRN
Ms. Goreth is a Nurse Practitioner at the Division of Pediatric Surgery University of Mississippi Medical Center-Children's of Mississippi and has 18 years of experience. She is a national lecturer with expertise in pediatrics, surgery care including trauma, and quality improvement. Throughout her career, she has been a member of multiple organizations and committees related to her areas of expertise. Currently, she serves as a member of the Pediatric Trauma Society Research Committee and multiple State Committees on Pediatric Trauma Care. In addition, Michelle is an active educator, currently serving as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a member of APSNA.
