Pediatric Trauma Webinar 2 provides an overview of Abdominal Trauma, Genitourinary Trauma and Musculoskeletal Trauma. This webinar includes epidemiology, etiology, and highlights the significance of anatomical and physiological differences between children and adult patients. Discussion includes primary and secondary trauma surveys, necessary diagnostic workup for the specified injuries, treatment and management of such injuries, and outpatient care with recommended follow up.


Lauren Kanamori Lauren Kanamori MSN, CPNP
Lauren Kanamori received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of California, San Diego in 1999 and her Masters of Science in Nursing at Boston College in 2003. She has been working at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange County, California as a pediatric nurse since 2004. She began her career as a bedside nurse working on the surgical unit for 11 years prior to her role as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric General, Thoracic, and Trauma Surgery since 2015. She works with a team of 8 pediatric surgeons, and 3 nurse practitioners in the inpatient setting, caring for patients from neonates to adolescents who require general surgery and trauma care. Lauren has been an APSNA member since 2015 and became co-chair of the APSNA Trauma SIG in 2018. She actively contributes to the development patient and family education materials, position statements and has led the effort to develop APSNAs first webinars on pediatric trauma with of the APSNA Trauma SIG. She has been a poster presenter and podium speaker at the APSNA annual scientific conference.

Learner objectives

The following presentation will aid the learner in their ability to:

  1. Identify the anatomical and pathophysiological differences in pediatric patients that will guide optimal care in the event of traumatic injury.
  2. Learn about the workup, diagnosis and treatment of different system injuries in the pediatric trauma patient.
  3. Understand the components of inpatient and outpatient recovery: medications, pain management, diet, activity and rehabilitation, imaging studies, lab tests, follow up care and anticipatory guidance.
