Management Principles of Pediatric Patient with Ostomies
This course was developed for nurses who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of the care of pediatric patients with ostomies. Content addresses evaluation, management and follow up for patients requiring ostomies. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.

Mrs. Cogley has been a Pediatric Surgery Nurse since 2002. For the last 5 years, Kim has been the coordinator of the Colorectal and Hirschsprung Center at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Her primary responsibilities are to organize and educate patients/families on all aspects of their diagnosis and treatment plan. Monthly workshops are held to educate patients, families and medical providers. The Colorectal team also travels worldwide operating and educating patients, families and medical providers on pediatric colorectal problems. She is a member of APSNA and is now serving as the 2018-2019 President Elect and with then transition to the 2019-2021 APSNA President.
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Identify diagnoses that can lead to creation of an ostomy
- Identify the most common types of ostomies
- Understand differences in surgically created ostomies
- Understand basic pouching techniques
- Identify complications related to an ostomy
- Troubleshoot problematic pouching
- Appreciate long term effects of ostomies
