Cutting Edge: The Science of Fertility Preservation
This course was presented at the 27th Annual Scientific Conference held in Palm Desert, CA in 2018. Conference registrants evaluate all conference presentations, and these are tabulated accordingly. This presentation was ranked in the top 5.
This course was developed for nurses who have an interest in learning the importance of surgical fertility preservation available to pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients. Indications for procedures and the role of the nurse and advance practitioner provide will be discussed. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.
Barbara Lockart MSN, DPN
Barbara Lockart holds an MSN in primary care pediatric nursing from Emory University and a DNP in acute care pediatric nursing from Rush University. She has joint appointments in Pediatric Surgery and Hematology/Oncology Divisions at Lurie Children's Hospital. Her career as an oncology APN started at Lurie in 2002. She was instrumental in developing the Fertility Preservation Program at Lurie Children's in 2004. Dr. Lockart is an expert in pediatric tumors and fertility preservation. She has spoken nationally and internationally on issues regarding pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancers and fertility preservation. She has co-authored book chapters and journal articles on the topics of pediatric oncology and fertility preservation. Additionally, Dr. Lockart has worked with the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses developing a White Paper and patient education materials on fertility preservation. In 2017 Ms. Lockart was awarded the Jean Ferguson award from the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses.
The following presentation will aid the learner in their ability to:
- Discuss patients at risk for infertility
- Identify fertility preservation techniques available to male and female patients
- Examine the role of the nurse and advance practice provider as a fertility preservation consultant in providing state of the art care to patients.
