Introduction

This course was developed for nurses who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of the care of neonatal surgical conditions. This web-based program features the following neonatal surgical conditions:

  • Esophageal atresia with and without tracheoesophageal fistula
  • Intestinal atresias
  • Anorectal malformations

Content addresses evaluation, management and follow up for these specific conditions. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.


Faculty

Jenifer ReitsmaJenifer Reitsma, MSN, APRN-CPNP
Jenifer Reitsma received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI in 1995 and her Masters of Science in Children’s Health Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2008. She is board certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She has been in pediatric nursing throughout her entire nursing career fulfilling roles as pediatric transport RN, pediatric critical care nurse, and pediatric clinical care coordinator. Since completing her graduate degree in 2008, she has served as a pediatric nurse practitioner in the department of pediatric surgery and trauma at Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic. In this role, she cares for children of all ages and their families who require general surgery or trauma-related care. Jenifer has a special interest in education, pediatric vascular access, and pediatric bowel management. Jenifer has been very active in promoting the role of the advance practice nurse at Sanford Health and is currently serving at the co-chair of the Advanced Practice Council. Jenifer has been a long-standing member of both NAPNAP and APSNA; she has also served on the APSNA Board of Directors as their membership chair. Recently, Jenifer published an article in Advances of Neonatal Care entitled, “Nursing Assessment of Intra-Abdominal Hypertension and Abdominal Compartment Syndrome in the Neonate”.
