Members of APSNA have nominated these highly qualified candidates to fill the available seats on our Board of Directors. The candidates below represent the evolving membership in APSNA, with greater representation from around the country. APSNA is a young organization that in a short time has grown tremendously in scope, membership, and professionalism. It is a pleasure to see a diverse pool of qualified candidates that reflects that growth.

    I am a leader who loves to serve! I take ownership of every project I’m involved in and encourage others to do the same. I pay attention to detail, work well with people, and have the amazing ability to resolve conflicts. I serve as a liaison between surgeons and families as well as surgeons and nursing staff. I enjoy taking fresh ideas making them a reality. I expect excellence from myself as well as others. I have the ability to walk in a room and change the entire mood! My smile, my personality, my conversation gets people interested and excited!!! I am sought out to lecture, discuss and mentor in Pediatric Surgery. I work with the only Pediatric Surgery Team in a 250 mile radius of my city, which makes me a leader for my specialty.

    It was a distinct honor to serve on the APSNA BOD from 2010-2014 (Secretary & Program Chair) and immerse myself in understanding the intricacies of organizational effectiveness and sustainability. During my tenure as a BOD, I was given the opportunity to restructure the website bulletin board to a working repository; collect, assemble, and store organizational historical materials; mentor 3 BOD members; participate in strategic planning; facilitate the Haiti-Miami outreach for the International SIG; and contribute to outsourcing strategies affording board members more professional governance. I was selected by the APSNA Executive Board to attend the Nursing Alliance Leadership Academy (NALA) in 2012. At NALA I was able to network with other national nursing organization leaders, while promoting APSNA. I led MCH APNs in clinical governance, performance, and appraisal activities as the APN council chair for 2 successive terms (MCH CNO appointment), 2009-2012. I am a board of commissioner (elected) for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, representing nursing service.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, a landmark report from the Institute of Medicine, calls for change in the health care system that would provide for higher quality, more affordable and accessible care. Nurses are identified as critical partners to successful implementation. Nursing organizations are urged to accelerate their attention in providing leadership development, mentoring programs, information systems infrastructures, and opportunities that focus on professional efficiency and diversity. Nursing leaders in response to these transformational times are challenged to provide bold, evidence-based leadership within their organizations. Looking at these opportunities in health reform, APSNA can expect to be called upon to provide significant expertise and guidance for nurse-led practice models, interprofessional education, and translational research related to exemplars of quality, safety and cost-effectiveness. As pediatric surgical nurses, we have a responsibility to our profession and to the vulnerable patients and families for whom we care to ensure our influence in this decisive process. Our professional partnership through APSNA is a strong predictor of successful alliances that advance policy for our profession, patients, and families. Collectively, what happens inside us largely determines what happens outside us. Acknowledging this, we can and should advocate in unity the needs of the nation’s health with power, purpose, and passion. APSNAs current initiatives are aligned to these recommendations, whilst fulfilling our mission and ensuring our upslope growth. My platform is to continue these efforts through advocacy, collaboration, service, and membership engagement while heeding the call of the IOM report.   • Past or present experiences and responsibilities that contribute to your qualifications for the office sought:
    I am actively serving on a quality improvement committee reviewing the educational needs of nurses caring for pediatric surgical patients with surgically placed drains, lines, and tubes. I have also worked closely with staff nurses to develop care plans specific to neonatal surgical patients. These projects were developed based on a gap in healthcare provider knowledge and hospital policies that lead to adverse patient outcomes.

    I am currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Artesia Christian Home, a multi-level care residential facility for senior citizens. I am a member of the Promotion Committee and my duties include planning and organizing the annual fund raising event as well as additional social events for financial supporters, staff, and residents of the facility. Additional responsibilities as a board member include reviewing monthly financial and investment reports, reviewing the overall day to day operations of the facility including nursing care, building maintenance, and performance of the staff and administration.

    I served on the APSNA Conference Program committee for 3 years from 2009 to 2011. As a member of the program committee, I was able to work closely with the Program Chair assisting in the planning and preparation for the annual APSNA conference.

    I have also served as a member of the Board of Directors for First Steps Christian Preschool. I served a three year term, the last of which I served as Board President. My duties included revision of the By-Laws, liaison between the Preschool Director and the staff, and development of a staff evaluation tool used to determine salary increases for the Director and staff members.

    My participation on the boards and committees discussed above will provide me with experience and skills that will contribute to my ability as Director at Large.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:

    As Director at Large I will promote the growth and mission of APSNA by collaborating with members of the Board of Directors, members of APSNA, as well as members of the nursing community. My goal will be to advance the quality of care of pediatric surgical patients by identifying issues related to nursing practice and the care of pediatric surgical patients. As Director at Large, I will be committed to advancing the care of pediatric surgical patients through dedication to nursing research, healthcare policy and identifying issues related to the care of pediatric surgical patients. As we move forward as an organization, I am dedicated to be a catalyst for change to meet the needs of not only the APSNA organization and members, but also the complex and changing healthcare needs of our pediatric surgical patients.


Laurie Sands RN, MSN, PNP PC/AC:

  • Past or present experiences and responsibilities that contribute to your qualifications for the office sought:
    As a PNP, I have worked in two separate institutions (Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago) in the role of a pediatric surgery APN which gives me an interesting perspective on the care of pediatric surgery patients. I have provided didactic lectures on the care of pediatric surgery patients to nursing staff, resident staff and masters nursing students at UCLA. I have spoken at national conferences: NAPNAP talk discussing TPN and I will be giving a talk at Lurie Children’s called "Belly Aches” discussing Pediatric Surgery patients. I presented two posters at the most recent APSNA conference: Fashion Victim: Ingestion of Faux Lip Rings and Surgical Consequences in a Pediatric Patient and Surgical Management of Ulcerative Colitis in Pediatric Patients: The J Pouch.

    I was awarded a Prince Grant this year by my institution to develop a resource guide to nursing staff on the care of pediatric surgery patients. This project entails working with seven pediatric surgery nurse practitioners to collaborate in writing a guide that is institution specific and up to date with current nursing policy for the care of inpatient surgery patients. I am responsible for quarterly reports to be submitted for grant funding.

    During the past year, I have developed discharge summaries for fellow APNs on my team to utilize in an effort to be more efficient in their daily workflow. Along with fellow APN colleagues, I helped to coordinate "APN week” which is a week to celebrate APNs at Lurie Children’s. I am currently on the Education Committee for APSNA as well as the Trauma SIG.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    I have been very involved in my institutions to promote excellence in Pediatric Surgery. My goal for this position is to broaden my personal commitment more globally to a national perspective. I hope to be forward thinking and provide succinct and timely communication to members of meetings, organize and maintain the APSNA bulletin board, and promote communication by providing a record of list serve discussions that require a vote, as well as be readily available to board members for enhanced communication.

    Last year I was the co-chair for the Children’s National Medical Center Nurse Practitioner conference. Part of my role in this conference included completing the necessary contact hour paperwork. In addition, while working at Children’s National I developed all of the patient and staff education materials used with our bariatric surgery program.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    My understanding is that Robin has done a fantastic job of streamlining the processes necessary to obtain contact hours at the annual conference. I would like to continue the work she has already started streamlining these processes. I think it is also important to stay in close communication with the program chair regarding conference planning.

      I have been in pediatric nursing throughout my entire nursing career. During the first thirteen years of my career I served in a variety of nursing roles: pediatric transport RN, pediatric critical care RN, and pediatric clinical care coordinator. I worked in these roles at both DeVos Children’s hospital (Grand Rapids, MI) and Sanford Children’s hospital (Sioux Falls, SD). Since completing my graduate degree in 2008, I have served as a pediatric nurse practitioner in the department of pediatric surgery and trauma at Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic. In this role, I care for infants and children of all ages and their families who require general surgery or trauma-related care in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

      I have a special interest in education- of nurses, nurse pracitioner students, residents, patients and families, pediatric venous access, post surgical care, pediatric bowel management and pediatric injury prevention. I have been very active in promoting the role of the advance practice nurse at Sanford Health and has served on multiple committees related to this topic. I am a member of NAPNAP, the Nurse Practitioner Association of South Dakota and APSNA. I have attended the APSNA conference on three occasions. I have a strong passion for pediatric surgical nursing and was recently a nominee for the Founder’s Award through APSNA (Annual Conference, Marco Island, FL, May, 2013).
