APSNA is proud to announce the opening of the elections for the
2008 Board of Directors
with the following candidates.

 

Members of APSNA have nominated these highly qualified candidates to fill the available seats on our Board of Directors. The candidates represent the evolving membership in APSNA, with greater representation from around the country. APSNA is a young organization that in a short time has grown tremendously in scope, membership, and professionalism. It is a pleasure to see a diverse pool of qualified candidates that reflects that growth.

    I currently manage the care of all patients on the pediatric surgery service, working with children from birth to 18 years of age, with a large variety of pediatric surgery diagnoses including: congenital defects, trauma, and burns. I work with three pediatric surgeons, and three residents. I am the only nurse practitioner for the service.

  • Past or present experiences and responsibilities that contribute to your qualifications for the office sought:
    I love the APSNA organization! Without the support of APSNA members, I could not grow in my role as a pediatric surgery NP. Our members are pioneers and trailblazers in the pediatric surgery specialty, and I take delight in their accomplishments. I enjoy learning from our own experts who generously share their knowledge and expertise on the listserv and at the annual conference. I immensely enjoyed being Publication Chair from 2005-2007. As part of the Leadership Team at Brenner Children's Hospital, I have the opportunity to present educational offerings, the responsibility of chairing committees, and a voice in decision-making.
  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    I am most interested in organizing the past history of APSNA, and recording the current history of APSNA through written and photographic records. I believe we are a growing and thriving organization with so much to offer to all pediatric nurses who work in children's hospitals, operating rooms, and outpatient surgery practices. I also eagerly anticipate the opportunity of working with award recipients, such as the Founder's Award nominees and winners. I am willing to take on more responsibilities as needed to assist the APSNA Board of Directors and to expand the role of the Director at Large to reach out to other nursing, medical, or parent organizations.

    I have worked in a variety of work settings in and outside of the hospital arena including industry during the FDA approval of the Lap Band in the US. I work in a very diverse fast pace, creative, and progressive environment in which CHANGE and persistence are considered positive character traits.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    My goals for the position is to continue to strengthen the organization thru exposure, recruitment, and collaboration with other partner organizations and groups. To assist in the development of a unified group of nurses and nursing colleagues who continue to keep the concerns of children and their families heathcare needs in the hearts and before the eyes of our global community.

    As treasurer I will maintain and support the financial goals of APSNA. I will work to enhance collaboration between membership, information systems and the treasury to best facilitate the membership renewal process.

My management position requires strong organizational skills to coordinate care for 12,000 patient visits per year among 16 providers.

    Supervise Trauma Staff including registrar, performance improvement coordinator, researcher, physician assistant and outreach coordinator.
    Oversee and provide in-patient and out-patient care for approximately 1000 critically injured children and 100 burned children / year

    Since I was a child I have always wanted to be a nurse. Fortunately, pediatric nursing has been my passion for 20 years. Nursing has provided me with wonderful experiences in those years and as each year passes a new, exciting and challenging opportunity unfolds. Having the honor of working with an extraordinary group of pediatric surgical nurse specialist, in the role of Development Chair for APSNA, is the next opportunity that I am excited to embrace. I have worked with many different vendors over the years, trialing products, providing feedback, changing practice and assisting in educational endeavors. These opportunities will facilitate future interactions with vendors. Moreover, my current role, in a busy pediatric surgery program, permits me to have extensive access to many companies. Year after year, the APSNA conference becomes more impressive. I am motivated to continue and expand on the wonderful job past chairs have accomplished. If elected I promise to do my best to continue the success of the APSNA conferences.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    As development chair I hope to:
    Expand the number of vendors in attendance at the annual APSNA conference
    Ascertain prizes for raffles and increase donations to APSNA
    Be a productive member of the board
    Work with hotel conference coordinator to assure smooth conference planning
    Review previous years evaluations and implement suggestions as appropriate
    Have fun working with many new people while providing good service!!!

    I served two terms as the Chair of the Development Committee of APSNA, I have served in several offices in the Iowa Nurse Practioner Organization, and the Iowa Affiliate of WOCN. I am the current President Elect for the Iowa Affiliate of WOCN.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    As nomination chair I would encourage and motivate members to run for office and to be active in our organization including attending conferences and banquets.

    As an ER ARNP, I am responsible for assessing, diagnosing and treating patients from all acuity levels. I perform procedures such as suturing, spinal taps, I&Ds, GT replacements ext. I order appropriate consults and assist the attending physician and surgeons during traumas.

  • Past or present experiences and responsibilities that contribute to your qualifications for the office sought:
    My experiences during college and now through my career have allowed me to run and hold offices. In college I was elected Panhellinic President, whom oversees all the sororities on campus. Now, during my short career, I have participated in committees at Miami Children’s Hospital including Recruitment and Retention committee and the Advanced Practice Council committee. Through these different experiences, I have learned leadership skills as well as learned how to work as a team.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    My main goal is to increase the number of members interested in running for office. I hope that if the number of people running for office increases then I will be able to establish a "co” position where the current officer can mentor the upcoming officer for 1 year. This will allow the younger APSNA members to learn more about the organization and also feel like they are participating in their organization. In addition, younger members will not feel like they are "thrown into” a position with out knowing much about it. Through the mentorship program they will have a year to observe the current officer and gain some experience without having total responsibility. Also, I would like to continue the tradition of the Founder’s award and perhaps establish a new award for upcoming members.

    Contributing writer in Sutureline through the Ethics Challenge Columns. I have developed wound care education programs at my teaching institution. I have experience in critiquing, proofreading research papers written by my surgical colleagues. I have excellent computer skills, and familiarity with newsletter format.

  • Summary of your goals for the position:
    As Publications Chair I plan to maintain the level of excellence achieved by APSNA's current and past Publication Chairpersons by continuing Sutureline as an electronic journal publishing original articles in all aspects of surgical nursing, current research, training, education, and practice.

Candidate: Information Systems Chair

    APSNA has been the greatest resource and inspiration for my personal growth and career. APSNA continually rekindles my spark to pursue excellence, and I feel gratitude to those who have helped me take better care of my patients. My goals include: ensuring that the website is meeting membership needs and is user friendly. I hope that our membership will use this web to share information regarding surgery conferences, educational resources, as well as promote individual list serves that will promote current practice standards.
